Knowledge Factory – Agile and Dynamics AX

I was invited by Microsoft to present at “Knowledge Factory” (educational and business conference) which begun on 7th September. This event is very important from bussines perspective and goverment so it was opened and key-noted by prime ministers and ministers from different departmetns. This year, the main focus of the “knowledge factory” was at business software solutions for various industries. “Knowledge Factory” was also open for the youngest visitors and guests from elementary and high schools.

On 10th September I presented an agile approach with Microsoft Dynamics AX development.

Below are two photos from the presentation. More photos from my presentation and others can be found in Sinergija’s Knowedge Factory Facebook album.

Best Innovation in Business use of IT

In the aftermath of our success with the big jump from version 3 to version 5 of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, we have extended our winning streak by winning the Serbian Association of Software Engineering’s Plaque for Innovation in Business use of IT.

For that matter I’ve been an honoured guest in the national radio show Digital Icons along with other winners.

Also the national television made a report on the Plaque winners during the final ceremony and can be seen here. A new company that specializes in electronic media also made the report which can be seen here.

Delta Sport again wins Diskobolos, this time in finances category

For the second year in a row Delta Sport has won the International ICT Award, Diskobolos (Discobolus), this time in finances category. The Diskobolos award is given by JISA (Union of ICT Societies of Serbia) for the best achievements in the usage of information and communication technologies in almost all fields of social and business life.

This year we entered the finals with our successful upgrade from version 3 to version 5 of Microsoft’s flagship ERP system (Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009). Microsoft has elected us as the best case study among 37 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and made a video case study about our “epic” ERP upgrade project.

At the official ceremony in the Continental Hotel, on behalf of the company, I received the award. Once again (like last year), I would like to emphasize that this awards is result of work of the whole company.

Microsoft Sinergija (Synergy) 2009

This year the Synergy (Sinergija) had two days of lectures, instead of three days like in previous years. I held three lectures this time:
  • Scrum with Team Foundation System 2010
  • The Big Jump – From “Axapta 3.0” to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009
  • Maintainable and Robust Development with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010
I was pleased to see that this year we had foreign guests attending the lectures, including my lecture on Scrum that I held in English in the manner of a friendly host.
What I am most proud of, among my this year’s efforts concerning the Synergy is that my role as coach was crowned by the fact that I had coached one of my associates so that he was able to hold a lecture all on his own, after just a few words of introduction by myself.

First CodeCamp – Serbia

It was a great pleasure to hold the lecture on Agile Software Development with Visual Studio at first ever Serbian CodeCamp which was sponsored by INETA.

I was happy to be invited and glad to see that many people attended this event. I would emphasize that the wide variety of subjects that was covered by this lecture gave it a highly exciting scent.

VoCamp, Nice, France

During the second half of september I’ve had a great pleasure to visit France and to attend the September 2009 voCamp Nice. voCamp is a camp (workshop) focused on building vocabularies (ontologies).

This year I became a member of GOOD OLD AI Research Network, and changed my Ph. D. thesis topic to finding the link between Agile Development and Intelligent Systems. Attending the voCamp was a great opportunity to see group and iterative-incremental development of ontologies in practice. Being as pragmatic as I am, I submitted two topics which are directly related to my everyday work.

voCamp Nice was a formidable experience. Fabien Gandon was the main host, and he very professionally handled the whole two-day event. I’ve had a pleasure to work on ontologies with many people of different age and occupations.

Here are two photos from the event (more here):

CSM Event in Belgrade – Walking with Giants

I had a great pleasure to be a part of the big Scrum event held in Belgrade.

Initiated by one of the key players in design patterns and the father of organizational patterns, as well as a CST (Certified Scrum Trainer), James Coplien, with the help of his Scrum Alliance fellow members and CSTs, Dan Rawsthorne, Alan Cyment together with by our own Branislav (Bran) Selić, the event took place 8-10 june 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia.

James had already been our guest back in 2004 and this time together with Dan, Alan and Bran  organized or offered this event with Siniša Vlajic’s support and direction. At the Faculty of Organization Sciences (FON) they organized 3 parallel Certified Scrum Master trainings with a fee that was almost an order of magnitude lower than usual.

I was honored to be part of this giants team, and to be the co-trainer for the largest group together with James. On the third day two-hour tracks were given by James, Dan, Alan and by Bran. You can take a look at third day topics in agenda.

The event was organized very professionally and the feedback I received afterwards was excellent. I really enjoyed all the discussions about a wide range of topics that we had in this 5 days (most of our guests arrived a few days before), and it was really inspiring to listen to these men.

For the ending, James, Dan and Alan (with Scrum Alliance’s blessing) gave their trainer’s fees to Sinisa to give it to charity cause of his choice.

The photo at the top, taken after the last lecture on the 3rd day and giving the fees to charity is showing (from left to right): Branislav (Bran) Selić, Dan Rawsthorne, Bojan Jovicic, James (Jim) Coplien,Siniša Vlajić. In row bellow on left you can see Alan Cyment during his CSM training, and on the right you can see James and me discussing scrum with our students.

The Big Jump: from Axapta v3 to Dynamics AX 2009 – Story of success

A few weeks ago, our company, Delta Sport, successfully made The Big Jump : from version 3 of MBS Axapta to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 (version 5).

To our information this was done before Microsoft’s patch for Eastern Europe. This was a large project with risks which have been mitigated by our previous experience and knowledge. Our IT Department, agile as we are, together with NPS as our partner, had prepared thoroughly, performed considerable number of modifications, worked closely with our key users, and now we are up & running. This is a huge benefit for our development team with all the new possibilities that Dynamics AX 2009 now offers us, as well as to the whole company with its new business features which are now available. The first benefits are already visible and we expect much bigger things in times to come.

Our success story has been published in number 102 of a popular magazine – Internet Ogledalo (Internet Mirror), titled Case study: Delta Sport and NPS – Story of Success (click the title of article to see it in their excellent online magazine viewer). You can find some shots from it below:

Once again, congratulations to all teams from the IT Department, and the whole Delta Sport.

Double Impact at InfoReview

The end of the year 2008, brought the last number of InfoReview magazine for the year 2008. This issue (number 6) amongst other articles featured the article “Software Engineering Evangelists”, about my brother Nenad and myself. Also an article was published about the Discobolos ICT Awards, with one photo of me was published together with other winners, and one of Delta Sport team. Both my brother and I were very happy when we found out that an article will be published about us and our efforts in promoting software engineering. We had the opportunity to work with their photographer, which was a real nice experience, and you can see the results. InfoReview is very high quality magazine, in high quality press, with articles in both Serbian and English.

Below you can see some scans of pages mentioned. The first row is from “Software Engineering Evangelists”, with the left photo in the first row showing my brother Nenad and me, and the right photo in the first row showing the Pexim team (upper) and the Delta Sport team (lower). The second row is from the Diskobolos article.
